CVS – Aetna: The Power of Strategic Competitive Analysis

Posted by Robert Flynn on Oct 27, 2017 2:46:39 PM

The Wall Street Journal and other sources revealed yesterday that pharmacy operator CVS Health Corporation has made an offer to acquire No. 3 health insurer Aetna Inc.  Wouldn’t it have been rewarding to have known the probability of such an acquisition?  Wouldn’t executives of Walgreens and Express Scripts or United Health Group and Anthem have benefited from an evaluation that showed the rationale for such an acquisition? Fuld + Company analysis produced in June 2017 did precisely that. Anticipating just such a move four months ago demonstrates of the power of competitive strategy.

Dell Acquires EMC: Heavy Clouds, No Rain

Posted by Ken Sawka on Oct 27, 2015 12:06:53 PM

On October 12, Dell announced its plans to acquire EMC Corporation for $67 billion
, the largest technology industry deal to date, a deal clearly intended to bolster Dell’s ability to compete in the increasingly lucrative corporate data center market. This move follows HP’s split into two organizations which itself was engineered to free HP’s enterprise business from the low-margin shackles of its consumer PC and printer business.  While the Dell-EMC deal will accelerate the transition of corporate data assets to the cloud, the new entity could face significant challenges that hamper its ability to make it rain.

Our experience conducting war games for Global Fortune 100 companies and analyzing competition in enterprise IT has made it clear that the market is undergoing a dramatic transformation. Our analysis, conducted over an extensive period of time and involving a variety of players, demonstrates that this transformation is characterized by several confluent factors that the combined EMC-Dell will have to navigate to achieve success:

Posted by Fuld + Company on Oct 12, 2015 11:00:00 AM

Case studies are a curious animal. Everyone thinks they're important, but no one wants to write them, and, apart from the headlines, people don't really read them. They just want to know what was the challenge, what was done, how successful it was.

So at Fuld, we're introducing something new: the microinfographic case study. It's like the quick summary from a 3-5 page case study, with illustrations.

Cyber Attacks and War Games: Plan for the Future

Posted by Leonard Fuld on Jul 28, 2015 9:19:12 AM

The crippling of the Wall Street Journal, United Airlines and the New York Stock Exchange web and trading sites earlier this month suggests a coordinated cyber attack. Even if hackers were not involved, all these institutions need to know what to do in case of such an attack. They should all have run what-if scenarios or war games to stress-test their resiliency in advance.

The Journal’s publisher did in fact admit last year (July 2014) that its graphics were hacked (fool me once, shame on you…)

Three Approaches to a Defined Strategy Roadmap

Posted by Alexis Kuchins on Jun 17, 2015 2:02:00 PM

A few weeks ago, I attended the Association for Strategic Planning (ASP) annual conference in Tysons Corner, VA. As this was my first entrée into the organization, I was excited to increase my strategy knowledge and skills, and take advantage of the various presentations. From the keynote speakers to the individual breakout sessions one thing was clear: without a defined strategy roadmap, one’s strategy is destined for a less then optimal outcome.

So how do you know if your strategy is on the path to success? Below are three paths to drive your business toward executing a highly impactful strategy.

Your Competition Doesn’t Wait To Turn Their Clocks Ahead So Why Should You?

Posted by Leonard Fuld on Mar 18, 2014 10:00:00 AM

Last year, while monitoring clinical trials for a number of competitors in the oncology field, we spotted a Twitter announcement from a third-party patient advocate who wanted to see this company renew a particular set of trials it had dropped. The advocate was working with this biotech competitor to recruit new patients and announce a special recruiting event. This Twitter feed continued for a couple of weeks then suddenly stopped once the biotech likely filled its patient quota. Social media signals like this one are essentially a small spark of intelligence you have to notice when it occurs. Had we not been monitoring this company’s tweets, we would have missed this early warning signal on the clinical trial restart and in this instance there were no lingering leaflets pinned onto bulletin boards or mass mailings designed to recruit patients.
